Book Review – Baseball Genius by Tim Green and Derek Jeter

Baseball GeniusBy Awnali Mills

Jalen makes a stupid decision to steal some baseballs from major league player James Yeager and gets caught.  To save himself, he offers Yeager a deal:  Jalen will help the player go 4 for 4 and save his contract with the Yankees.  Jalen can do this because he’s a baseball genius.  He can almost always tell what the pitcher is going to throw before he throws.  But will Jalen have to give up his own dreams to help Yeager save his?

Personally, I think baseball is an incredibly dull sport.  I know, I know: sacrilege.  But Green and Jeter do a great job of building tension and making me care about the outcome of pitches.  I confess, I skipped paragraphs of statistics to get to the action, but baseball fans would probably appreciate them.  More important to me is that Jalen is learning to be a person of integrity, and how to be a good friend.  The authors left quite a cliffhanger, so there’s another book on the way.  Recommended for sports fans grades 3-6.

P.S. It was a little surreal having Mr. Jeter write about himself in the third person…
